South Carolina Division

Attention SC MFTs!

As of 3/08/18, there is a proposed bill in the SC House of Representatives (HB 4601) that was passed in committee that will reduce the number of SC MFT seats on the LLR Board from three to two.

The bill was proposed to allow for licensing of addictions counselors and to give them two seats on the board. While we are happy to see the licensure of other mental health professions and believe that it will benefit SC, we do not want to lose our representation on the board.

We recently proposed an amendment to increase the number of board members from ten to eleven. This will allow MFTs to retain the current number of seats and for the new license to have two seats. This amendment was not made in the most recent committee vote.

As your SC board, we ask that you contact the representatives in your area to request the bill be amended to raise the board to eleven seats with MFTs retaining three of those seats. Please feel free to contact us via SCAMFTboard@gmail.com if you have further questions.

Below is some suggested wording for an email to your representative: (Remember that while emails are important, a phone call to the office may be even better!)

You can find your representatives by going to this address: http://www.scstatehouse.gov/legislatorssearch.php

Representative <Insert Name>,

I understand that HB 4601 has recently passed in committee, and I am writing to request the bill be amended to raise the number of board members from ten to eleven seats with Marriage & Family Therapists continuing to retain three of those seats. While we are happy to see the licensure of other mental health professions and believe it will benefit South Carolina, we do not want to lose representation on the board. Thank you for your time and consideration in this important matter.

Sincerely,

<Name>

Member of the SC Association of Marriage & Family Therapists

  • LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

    Due to our members speaking to their Representatives, the House unanimously passed an amendment to HB 4601 which allows MFTs to maintain the same level of representation they currently have on the Licensing Board.

    The bill has also passed in Senate.

    Good work to all of you who advocated for our field on this matter!
