South Carolina Division

Thanks For Making Our Spring Conference A Success!

A Special Thanks to Our Sponsors!

Letter from Our President

As the year winds to a close the opportunity to reflect    back on the last year and look forward to our future seems  important.  So much has happened in the world and in our  country.  Change is ever present. As therapists, we often  strive to bring change into the lives of our clients, but  sometimes when it comes knocking at our door we can be  hesitant to receive it. We, as MFTs, are presented with  yet another opportunity to grow and change.  So I would  like to invite you to contemplate what this change can  mean not only for you but also for your colleagues and the  profession as a whole.

This summer AAMFT is requesting a vote to change the bylaws from a two-tier structure.  If this vote passes you would be able to become a member of AAMFT and then would have the opportunity to join other special interest groups as well.  State divisions will have the option to dissolve, form a special interest group, or form an independent affiliate.  There is a lot that goes into this decision.  South Carolina is currently a mid-sized division but on the small end of that.  We have approximately 250 members.  We have been a financially stable institution thanks to past leadership and the careful management of Marie Queen. However, we face a future of an inevitable decline in membership.  With almost half of our membership 65 or older we face the possibility of losing a great number of our members to retirement within the next 10-15 years.  Those numbers are not likely to be replaced by incoming memberships of students and fellows.   AAMFT is interested in protecting our profession and meeting the needs of members in the ever changing landscape of today’s world. I am sure that there are many questions that you all have so we would like to have some regional town hall meetings to present the information we have and invite your comments, questions, and concerns. Dates and locations will be announced on our website and in future emails so please keep your eyes open.

We are also excited to announce the results of our most recent election.  Please take the time to congratulate these board members as they prepare to help lead our division through these times of transition.

Kelly Kennedy – Member at Large

Laura Long – Upstate Regional Representative

If you are interested in helping serve your state’s policy interests please consider joining the Family Team. To learn more about it check out this video:

The spring conference will be in Charleston March 10-11th.  We are excited about hearing from Dr. Cravens about subjects that are so relevant to working with clients in this digital age. We hope to continue to make the conference a fun way to learn and network with each other.

Next year will also be a time for us to recognize those who have served as MFTs for many years.  We will be interviewing willing participants and receiving written works from others as we explore the legacy that MFTs have cultivated in this state and for the profession.  Be on the look out for articles, blog entries, and videos exploring these wonderful clinicians and their work.

Finally, I want to take the opportunity to thank all of you for doing the work that you do. There is great diversity in how we do what we do but at the core, we have the same goals.  To respect the person, the families, the systems, and the relationships. To help people towards growth and change.  It is deeply challenging and often underappreciated. This work can stretch us greatly and outcomes can sometimes be a mystery.  From my years studying and then working in this profession, I can say that I have had the privilege of meeting amazing people. Many have been clients but there have been a great many who have been colleagues and mentors. I am grateful to be a part of this group of caring professionals and look forward to knowing (sometimes without seeing) that great works will be done.

All my best,

    Hey Everyone!

As you've probably heard, the by-law changes passed at the National Level which means that we will be transitioning from SCAMFT to a Special Interest Network (SIN). The SCAMFT Board has been busy preparing for this transition, and we need input...what should we name our SIN?
